Betting Checklist and Tips
If you are looking for some tips and tricks that we utilize before placing our bets, you have come to the right place!
*Below is a checklist of things you should check prior to placing your wagers as reassurance you are picking the correct team…
Line movement- Did the line change since it opened? If so, how significant was the change? A half point or 1 point either way is typical, but did the line move 3 points or more? If so, you should do some research as to why. This could certainly effect which team you chooes, or give you reason to lay off a particular game.
Player news/injuries- If there was a big line movement, it could be due to a key player being injured or out on either team. Make sure you look into this prior to putting your bet in. If a key player is a game time decision, check on his status closer to gametime.
Betting trends- Betting trends can be used to see which way the public is leaning. Typically, the trends can effect who we like. For example, if a big favorite has a 90% trend, and the line moved 3 points we would typically shy away from betting it unless we feel very strongly the team will cover anyway. Conversely, if there is reverse line movement this is a red flag as well.
ATS stats- This is another tool you can find online to check your team’s “against the spread” record. Typically if we use this stat we will look at the last 5-10 game.
Weather report- This is mainly important in football. If the weather is rain or extremely cold this could certainly effect the over/under of the game, and player performance.
*Now that you know what to check before placing your bets, here are a few tricks we use for our selections…
MLB- One word, pitchers! Pitchers are the key. Stud pitchers are always big ML favs but if their team has no problem producing runs, the -1.5 line is usually a safe bet. If 2 studs are pitching, and you expect a pitchers duel take the under, especially if the line is 7.5 or higher. Also look out for pitchers who are always favored because their team is good, but they are not! We like to take the ML against these pitchers. Sure the +1.5 runline is the more tempting bet, but always try to get more bang for your buck whenever possible.
NBA- One theory “The best player on the court”. This theory is helpful in games where 2 subpar teams are playing. In hoops, 1 player can greatly effect the outcome of the game. And when 2 “superstars” are competing head to head, the better of the 2 players will look to take over and dominate the game. Also, look out for travelling teams on a back to back. Shy away from betting them in most cases when the home team was off.
NFL- To be added once the season begins. For now, look at the futures odds. MVP, Team to win the Super Bowl, Most passing yards for a QB. Good value can be found in those bets. We will post some that we like as the season gets closer.
